    The 11.7 eV sensor lamp is a notoriously difficult lamp to manufacture. Due to its highly sensitive nature, 11.7 eV devices in the past have been temperamental, require frequent lamp changes and ultimately end up with increased environmental exposure, affecting performance of the device.

    ION Science has tackled this issue and developed a refined manufacturing method that eliminates some of the sensitivities and issues previously associated with 11.7 eV detection.

    As the first 11.7 personal detection solution from ION Science, the Cub 11.7 offers all the features a customer would expect from the market leader.

    This includes resistance to humidity and moisture, operational in temperatures from 0-55 degrees, and intrinsically safe even in explosive environments. Its lightweight design at only 111g makes it comfortable for wearers and the small size doesn't impede movement or work.

British scientists could prompt green manufacturing revolution

A British team of scientists has successfully pioneered a way to enable manufacturers to convert CO2 into polyols, a key building block of polyurethane plastic, which is widely used to make a wide range of products.

brit team 5 sept Laboratory webEconic Technologies is hoping that by 2027, 30% of all polyol production will take place using the catalyst, meaning that 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions could be saved each year – the equivalent to taking two million cars off the road.

With a global market valued in excess of £15 billion, polyols are the key building blocks in polyurethane, which is used to make automobiles, bedding, furniture, footwear and other household and industrial products. Econic Technologies' new tunable catalyst now enables polyol manufacturers to incorporate bespoke amounts of captured CO2 emissions into these polyol chains during the manufacturing process. The amount of CO2 can be dialled up or down depending on the performance requirements of the application.

The tunable catalyst means that CO2 can be incorporated at low pressures via equipment that is retrofitted easily and economically to existing production plants. By allowing for a reduction of oil-based feedstocks, the catalyst could save a typical production unit with an output of 50kte/annum in excess of £36 million per year.

Dr Rowena Sellens copyWhat's more, not only does the catalyst enable manufacturers to use their own carbon dioxide emissions as a raw material, but by reducing quantities of environmentally demanding, oil-based inputs, it further lowers emissions.
