Redesigning Laboratory Consumables for a Sustainable Future
Laboratory, Monitoring, Process & Analytical
Across labs, sustainability is often framed through large, visible systems, energy consumption, facility design, and instrumentation efficiency. Yet some of the most persistent environmental impacts originate much closer to the experiment itself. Consumables, like pipette tips, are a clear example as they are essential to most workflows, used in vast quantities, and largely overlooked in sustainability calculations.

Water
Kemio represents a step-change in water analysis — an award‑winning platform that combines advanced electrochemistry with intuitive design to deliver rapid, laboratory‑grade results directly at the point of need.
Ultravalve, a specialist supplier of RPZ valves and backflow prevention solutions, has launched a new digital RPZ test kit designed to support compliance with updated Water Regs UK guidance on the installation and testing of Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) valves, which came into force on 1 January 2025.
Microplastics and the New Definition of Water Purity
Microplastic particles have emerged as a significant class of environmental contaminants in recent years. Defined as micro plastic particles smaller than 5,000 µm but larger than 1 µm they are now widely detected across marine and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as in drinking water and biological samples. Although their long-term health implications are still being investigated, early studies indicate potential associations with inflammatory responses, cellular stress, and broader biological interactions.
In environmental testing, detecting PFAS is tricky. Measuring compounds at single digit parts-per-trillion (ppt) or sub-ppt levels leaves little room for error, yet some of the biggest risks don't come from the sample itself, but from the laboratory environment.
Xylem is proud to be one of the partners in the The River Deep Mountain AI (RDMAI) project. This is a collaborative, open-source initiative led by Northumbrian Water. The open-source release of a suite of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) models is set to transform the way water quality data is collected and used.
Insights from a successful partnership between Xylem and Yorkshire Water, that has led to 51% reduction in reactive pumping station visits, will be shared during an online innovation showcase.
The Unified Water Label Association (UWLA) has launched an animated film to support installers and help them communicate the Water Matters message to their customers.
Pielkenrood is one of the world's leading experts in the field of oil / water separation and water treatment and Envorem has chosen to include Pielkenrood technology in its trailblazing sludge and soil remediation system.
